Drug and alcohol addiction treatment programs generally fall into any one of two categories — inpatient or residential treatment programs and outpatient treatment programs. While each program has its unique attributes and benefits, residential treatment programs ensure lasting recovery from addiction because of its more structured approach.
From detoxification and rehabilitation to psychotherapy and long-term follow-up, residential treatment programs are comprised of a variety of interventions to help an individual achieve sobriety and a substance-free lifestyle.
What is Residential Treatment?
Also known as inpatient rehab, a residential treatment program requires a client to spend 30-90 days at a licensed facility designated for those who are battling with drug or alcohol addiction. During their stay at the rehab center, the client is provided all the support and care they need to combat and overcome their substance abuse problem.
Benefits of Residential Treatment Programs
There are a number of reasons clients choose inpatient rehab programs over outpatient treatment. Some of these include:
Improved Patient Comfort
Detoxification is an essential part of recovery. However, halting the drug use or tapering the dose of a drug or alcohol produces a variety of psychological and physical withdrawal symptoms. If left untreated, these withdrawal symptoms can be very discomforting to the client. Opting for residential treatment allows the client to get round-the-clock medical care from expert professionals. Depending on the severity of symptoms, anti-anxiety drugs, antidepressants, pain killers, and other medicines may also be used to ensure client’s comfort. Therefore, residential programs ensure a more comfortable and relatively pain-free journey to complete recovery.
Greatest Chance of Successful Recovery
Residential treatment programs are designed to meet the unique needs and expectations of a client. As a result, they offer the greatest chance of successful lasting recovery, helping an individual lead an addiction-free life. In addition, residential treatment programs use a variety of interventions, such as drug detox, medical monitoring, psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, etc., many of which cannot be offered to the client on an outpatient basis.
Treatment in A Substance-Free Environment
Residential treatment programs allow a client to complete the detoxification and rehabilitation process in a substance-free environment that focuses on reducing drug cravings and helping the client complete the detoxification process successfully. In addition, the client also becomes a part of a community of individuals who are facing the same challenges, and as a result, feels more motivated to achieve abstinence.

What to Expect
A typical residential treatment program begins with a thorough client assessment performed within 24 hours after admission. The purpose of this assessment is to gather complete information about a client’s medical history, drug or alcohol addiction, any concurrent psychological or physical illnesses, and their goals and objectives. Based on this knowledge, an individualized treatment plan is prepared.
The client undergoes a medically-supervised alcohol or drug detoxification during the first week. Most clients experience withdrawal symptoms during this period. Therefore, a team of professionals work tirelessly to ensure the client feels as comfortable as possible.
Rehabilitation process starts immediately after detoxification. The patient is required to take part in a variety of individual and group therapies. The purpose of these therapies is to help clients gradually decrease negative thought patterns and begin to feel more motivated about recovery. From meditation to emotional regulation and client counseling, a variety of techniques are used depending on a client’s individual needs and preferences.
Since lasting recovery is possible only with continued support, Quest 2 Recovery offers on-going care to its clients on an as-needed basis. Clients can visit and seek advice from our professionals even after discharge, in order to stay abstinent.
